NYBCP are committed to the development of our staff and continual training for all our employees is a high priority.
This has been evident recently, with Christy McGibbon, Assistant Building Surveyor continuing with his ongoing requirement to carry out structured training as an RICS candidate. Christy recently attended an ‘Intermediate Structures’ course in London which was held by LABC.
The course was aimed at building control staff and designers who were looking to develop their understanding of structural works associated with domestic construction and included common foundation design, simply supported structural elements, timber floor joist design and steel beam design.
The course was delivered by a representative of David Smith Associates and covered each element as a separate module. Christy said ‘all the content was really interesting. After attending I feel more than comfortable dealing with calculations on structures and better equipped for checking elements on site and where potential problems may occur.’
Six Officers from NYBCP attended a ‘Fire Safety Essential’ workshop on Thursday 10 January at the Queens Hotel in Leeds. This course was facilitated by LABC and delivered by David Ware. The aim of the workshop was to give an overview of the various fire safety issues that architects and building control officers require a solid understanding of.
The workshop looked at the role of building regulations with regard to fire safety and the various approaches to demonstrate compliance. It also discussed issues such as fire alarms, emergency lighting and fixed suppression systems that can be used to vary guidance.
Liam Bongard-Lincoln, Assistant Building Surveyor said ‘I personally found the workshop very useful, the aim of the day was to understand the functional requirements of Approved Document B and means of demonstrating compliance. This included designing to British Standard BS9999.
Robert Harper, Head of Building Control said ‘NYBCP are dedicated to providing a top quality service and the knowledge of its staff guarantees a high level of support for the public we deal with on a day to day basis.’
